Even though I’m not a Mets fan, I can’t help but love this tune. This song was written in 1961 by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz, and it definitely puts me in that time period. It kind of makes me want to get dressed up, stop for some ice cream, then stroll down to the ballpark.
As someone who grew up on the triumvirate of Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy, and Ralph Kiner, “Meet The Mets” is a big part of my childhood. As an aside, it was considered a matter of course that, as soon as Bob Murphy said a pitcher had “good stuff”, he would get absolutely shelled immediately after that.
Nothing like saying it out loud to jinx it! This is why nobody talks to a pitcher throwing a perfect game.
Love this! Thanks for sharing. My brother-in-law grew up as a Mets fan and whenever we talk about the Mets we all start singing this song and a 52 year old guy is suddenly a little kid again. 🙂
Glad I could bring back some great memories!
after a drunk night, my mind, body and soul all hanker for the Lawrence Welk Show.
in the morning that is….during the hangover or left over as we used to call it.
I’ve never actually watched it, but from what I’ve seen/heard about it, I can definitely see how this would remind you of it.
