On December 12, 1998, Kevin Brown signed a contract with the Dodgers that made him baseball’s first $100 million man. The $105 million, seven-year contract included a $5 million signing bonus and a $10 million salary in 1999, and salaries of $15 million annually for the remainder of the contract.
Brown wasn’t worth that kind of money, and nobody playing today is worth that kind of money, either. These ridiculous contracts are why we pay through the nose for parking, seats, food and drink. Where does it all stop? Until they get a handle on this insanity, I’ll watch most games from the comfort of home.
I’m basing my opinion strictly on numbers because I don’t remember seeing him pitch in person or on TV. He has phenomenal stats both before the big contract and after. Makes me think he should be in the Hall of fame. Heck, maybe he already is?
It doesn’t appear he’s in. It also looks like he was implicated in steroid use in the Mitchell Report, so that’s probably why?
