After a couple of years with the Yanks, Joe DiMaggio is supposed to have gone to Ed Barrow about a raise. Barrow asked how much? DiMaggio gave a number. According to legend that led to the following exchange:
Barrow: “That’s more than Gehrig gets.”
DiMaggio: “Gehrig”s underpaid.”
Don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a great story.

Reminds me of an alleged response Babe Ruth made to a sportswriter who questioned whether he should be making more money than the President of the United States. “Why not? I had a better year than he did.”
