With the starts by Sale and Scherzer, tonight’s ASG will be the second time in history that the Midsummer Classic will feature the same starting pitchers in consecutive seasons. The first time this happened was in 1939 and 1940, with pitchers Red Ruffing of the Yankees versus Cincinnati’s Paul Derringer.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 8 pm ET at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

This day in baseball

On January 3, 1943, 37 year-old Yankee right-hander Red Ruffing was drafted in to the Army, despite his age and despite the fact that he had lost four toes on his left foot in a mining accident in Coalton, Illinois when he was fifteen years old.  The Army decided that Ruffing could serve in a non-combat role, where he pitched for the Air Transport Command’s baseball team and led the troops in physical fitness training.

This day in baseball: DiMaggio’s debut

Surrounded by a whirlwind of hype and expectation, New York Yankees rookie Joe DiMaggio made his Major League debut on May 3, 1936, at the age of twenty-one.  Joining the ranks of Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Red Ruffing, and Lefty Gomez, DiMaggio led the Yankees to a 14-5 victory over the St. Louis Browns.  In the game, DiMaggio collected three hits, including a triple, and scored three runs.
