This day in baseball: All-Star walk-off

On July 8, 1941, the American League All-Stars defeated the National League All-Stars 7-5 when Boston’s Ted Williams launched a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.  The walk-off blast, hit off Claude Passeau, made this the first All-Star Game to be decided in the final inning.

Surrounded by a whirlwind of hype and expectation, New York Yankees rookie Joe DiMaggio made his Major League debut on May 3, 1936, at the age of twenty-one.  Joining the ranks of Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Red Ruffing, and Lefty Gomez, DiMaggio led the Yankees to a 14-5 victory over the St. Louis Browns.  In the game, DiMaggio collected three hits, including a triple, and scored three runs.

This day in baseball: The union of Monroe and DiMaggio

On January 14, 1954, Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio and actress Marilyn Monroe eloped and got married in San Francisco City Hall.  While the romance between the two superstars captivated the nation, it proved to be a doomed union, almost from the get go.  In October 1954, only 274 days after they were married, the couple divorced.

Quote of the day
