I feel stupid and don’t get this. Why would she say that? I’ve never heard of her. Any insight as to what this quote implies? I do like her name in that two former pitchers have the last name Bankhead – the first African American pitcher to play in a MLB game was Dan Bankhead and more recently there was Scott Bankhead who I think once pitched for the Royals.
Tallulah Bankhead was an actress, especially big during the 1930s and 1940s from what I’ve seen. Also a huge, huge baseball fan. We read a piece she wrote during the Literature of Baseball course I sat in on these last several months, and she talks about how worked up she gets just from watching a game — really, super intensely passionate about baseball. Thanks Precious. I have that anthology here. It’s one of those books that doesn’t need to be read cover to cover, beginning with page 1. I had no idea Tallulah Bankhead was mentioned in it. I had no idea who she was. Now I do and now I read, “Bankhead’s prose does not, of course, have the tone of a professional sportswriter. It’s eccentric, it’s filled with breezy personal-confession moments, tossed off into the mix, and it’s very very funny.”
And that sounds wonderful! I’m eager to read the piece you read in class and others and like you say, maybe watch some of her movies, read an autobiography as well.
