“Pitching Game (A Good Changeup),” by Tim Eichhorn

I like the simplicity of this piece. Simple, yet profound, especially if you’ve tried your hand at throwing a changeup and realized what an art form it truly is.

*

A good fastball
is not achieved
without a good
changeup. That
is to say that one
must feel the circle
within his stretched
hands and gently
unravel her laces
with your fingertips;
before you simply
jam it up inside of
the zone as fast as
you can.

  1. When I first read the title or the author I mistakenly thought it was pitcher Mark Eichorn. I don’t know if he threw a changeup. Anyway, I like how you summed this one up – “simple, but profound.” Pitching a baseball is a such a miracle.

    1. I never thought about pitching as a miracle, but now that you mention it, yes, it really is. The things some of these pitchers can do with a baseball are truly unbelievable.

      1. I know. It’s wild. And every year or so, there’s a new pitch invented. The latest one I’ve seen is the sink change or called something like that…..a changeup that sinks.
