Quote of the day

The difference between the old ballplayer and the new ballplayer is the jersey. The old ballplayer cared about the name on the front. The new ballplayer cares about the name on the back.

I’m not sure Garvey’s x’s would nod their heads in agreement to this quote of his, but soap operas aside, I wonder if Garvey’s referring to selfishness or the break down of team tradition? I would think it must be hard to really care about a team and a city when you have the option to leave through free agency. For all the evil we attach to the reserve clause, maybe there were some positives.

    • A combination, I think? I agree, there was that advantage to the reserve clause. I do think the clause needed to be eliminated, however, baseball has gone too far in the other direction from it.
