This day in baseball: First round KO

After getting ejected from a game for disputing a called third strike on July 10, 1911, the Phillies’ Sherry Magee knocked out home plate umpire Bill Finneran with just one punch.  Although he was suspended from baseball for the rest of the season, Magee managed to appeal successfully and gained reinstatement after 36 games.

    1. I have images of George Brett charging out of the dugout flashing through my mind, but you certainly make a good point. Not too many stories of umps getting punched recently. 🙂
