Derek Jeter Isn’t The Greatest Player Ever

The entirety of this season seems to have been engulfed by Derek Jeter farewell ceremonies, to which I have only paid half-attention.  While I do think that Jeter is a phenomenal ballplayer, deserving of his place in the Hall of Fame, I think I have to agree with Mr. Olbermann on this one: this season-long farewell tribute is a bit ridiculous.  On that note, this video also provides a bunch of interesting statistics and Yankees history, in support of Olbermann’s statement.

    1. Following Jeter’s final visit to Kauffman Stadium, Alex Gordon made a comment to the press that he was sure fans were ready to be done with all the ceremonies and just get back to baseball. Oh so true!

  1. Derek Jeter–great player but neither the greatest Yankee (can you say “Babe Ruth”?) nor the greatest shortstop (try “Honus Wagner” this time).

  2. He’s a player that the game should celebrate. But as in all things MLB, it’s overdone, over produced and just one more “event” (season-long, albeit) designed to make money. Enough is enough. Or did Alex Gordon say that?

    1. I wish I could find the story that I originally read that had Gordon’s comments, but it’s buried in all the hoopla that’s happened since then. I agree, definitely designed to make money.

    1. Drowned out by all the other hubbub. I hadn’t even heard much about him in recent years, much less that he was retiring. Just looked up some of his numbers. A pretty phenomenal career.

      1. me neither and then he resurfaced on the mets this year and i was like..is that the same bobby abreu and it was and now he retired.
