On May 11, 1950, Connecticut Senator Abe Ribicoff introduced a bill to Congress to designate June 26th “National Baseball Day,” in honor of the birthday of Major General Abner Doubleday. Doubleday, of course, was at one time credited with inventing the game of Baseball. Sadly, the bill was never approved by Congress.
there’s some city in spain that has a tomato day and if i remember right, people throw the tomatoes at each other. i guess it’s a release of some sort. better than a civil war. i like the baseball day idea and think we should have more days dedicated to things.
I’ve always wanted to participate in the tomato festivities — it does look like it’d be incredibly cathartic. And given the tendency to work too much in this country, I agree, we need more holidays, preferably ones that shut things down.
