Owners of the emerging American League met on December 22, 1899 in an attempt to strategize a way to substantiate themselves in the face of an already-established National League. As part of their strategy, they decide to place a team in Chicago with Charles Comiskey as the owner-manager of the club.
Hot damn!!!! This past September I was visiting my mom and dad in Milwaukee. I always like walking around the Historical Society, behind the Milwaukee River. There’s a head statue of Pere Marquette, commemorating the French Canadian roots of Milwaukee, Algonquian being the other roots. Well, as I walked away from the statue, back to the sidewalk, I noticed for the first time a plaque and the words “American League” and holy mackeral, there was a SABR stamp and some sort of dedication to the Republican House, 1886-1961, room 185, on the night of of March 5, 1900, the birthplace of the American League. Henry Killilea among more well known baseball names in attendance, Connie Mack, Charles Comiskey. And my mind raced up to the late 1970’s and early 80’s Brewers and the escape latch on the time machine keeps getting thicker. I may never get out.
