Graphic: Ruth traded

Babe Ruth trade

I don’t know who created this graphic, but it’s pretty brilliant.  (It seems highly unlikely that it is a genuine front page from the time, but someone please correct me if I’m wrong!)  Ruth’s leaving Boston to join the Yankees is one of those moments that has become part of the legend.  Admittedly, seeing his face split like this is a bit disconcerting, but the idea behind the photo is pretty cool.

  1. Maybe a third one can be added, a Boston book end since Ruth finished up back there, as a Brave. I wonder if it felt like a slap in the face to Brave’s fans, getting Ruth after the sultan lost his swat or maybe fans welcomed it like Milwaukee did when Aaron returned as a Brewer? I’m not old enough to remember the Aaron feeling, but I was around when Parker joined the Brewers and that was exciting.

    1. “After the sultan lost his swat.” Nice turn of the phrase! Aaron spoke highly of Milwaukee and how loving the fans were. I can’t say I’m convinced Boston fans would be the same way.
