The final game of the first-ever World Series was played in October 13, 1903 between the Boston Americans (Red Sox) and the Pittsburgh Pirates. In Game 8 of the best-of-nine Series, Boston defeated Pittsburgh, 3-0, to take the championship 5 games to 3. Boston’s Bill Dinneen earned the victory over Deacon Phillippe of the Pirates.
Love that photo of Mr. Dinneen – he looks so elegant and so confident (and very particular about his hair). I wonder what he would have though of the style of Jacob deGrom? 🙂
I’m sure many of the hairstyles we see today would cause him to shudder. Just look at his part! It’s like he did it with a ruler. 🙂
I think that’s when we had our priorities in order….a 9 game series. Maybe it sounds more than it is, just the first team to win 5 games I guess, but still more than our best of 7 and they had no domes either.
“Best of nine” does make it sound more demanding. You’re absolutely right, it’s basically just first to five wins.
