The Pittsburgh Pirates played their final game at Exposition Park against the Chicago Cubs on June 29, 1909. The Pirates won the game 8–1 in front of 5,545 spectators, with George Gibson collecting the final National League hit in the ballpark. The very next day, the Pirates once again played the Cubs, this time with the team opening up Forbes Field.
those old stadia have a certain nostalgic feel, but they sure look primitive today.

They do. No “nosebleed” seats, as we think of them. No ginormous screen. No fancy business suites. But it sure would be cool to go back in time and watch a ballgame or two in one of them.
Nice article. Great photo!
Thank you! 🙂
This one’s great with a real train passing by – smoke rising which i guess is from coal and the river and in the lower left corner, what looks like a roller coaster.
Oh, good eye! I’ve been so focused on the field, I didn’t even notice the rollercoaster. And yeah, the train is a nice touch. Certainly adds to the nostalgia of the photo.
